Norman Walsh's DocBook: The Definitive Guide is available as a book at O'Reilly and online. The introductory chapter contains an excellent overview about the concept of SGML.
The PSGML package contains a handbook in Postscript format which you can print using Ghostview. This is an valuable reference which explains the commands and the variables which you may use for further customization.
Bob DuCharme has published online a chapter of his SGML book which explains how to write and modify SGML files using Emacs and PSGML. These 100 pages called "Editing SGML documents with the Emacs text editor" are an excellent tutorial to learn and understand PSGML thoroughly.
The TDTD archive contains tutorial.txt which covers the editing of DTDs with TDTD.
