Before you can start off to measure with Tricarb, several things must be set properly on both the computer running Tricarb Monitor and the Tricarb counter. These settings are discussed in the following sections.
The following settings must be entered into the Tricarb Counter software, using the counter keyboard. The first setting is a general one which applies to all counter protocols. The second setting must be activated in every counter protocol.
Open the Computer output page by pressing the F8 key on the Tricarb Counter keyboard. Set the following parameters:

| Output heading | no |
| Output format | select cells |
Select the following cells for output: [1 2 3 4 5 6 8 9 11 12 18 0].
Return to the main screen by pressing F1. Open the SYSGEN page by pressing F10 and set the computer output baud rate to 9600. Return to the main screen by pressing F1.
Edit all available protocols by pressing the F1 key on the Tricarb Counter keyboard. After opening one of the protocols for editing, press the PageDown key. Toggle the Output to RS232 option to yes.
