___________
1) Overview

This archive contains the Tricarb Monitor software. Tricarb Monitor is designed to receive data from a Packard Tri-Carb 1600 TR beta counter and to save the data in a format which can easily be imported by spreadsheets and the MultiCalc package. The software may be distributed freely.
Handbooks in HTML and postscript versions are available at:

http://members.tripod.com/~mhoenicka/tricarb.html

It is strongly recommended to read one of these handbooks in addition to this file and the online help.

2) System requirements

Tricarb Monitor is a 16bit Windows application which runs on Windows 3.1 or higher. A 80386 IBM PC or compatible with 40+MB harddisk, 4+MB memory, EGA or VGA display, and one free serial (RS232) port is sufficient.

3) Packing list

README.TXT The file you're reading now
TRICARB.EXE The executable
TRICARB.HLP The help file

4) Installation instructions

These instructions are very minimalistic. It is strongly recommended to read one of the handbooks (see above).
- Prepare a directory tree for the software, e.g. by creating C:\TRICARB\DATA.
- Copy the files TRICARB.EXE and TRICARB.HLP into the directory \TRICARB.
- Connect the PC to the counter with a suitable serial cable.
- Prepare the counter and the protocols for RS232 output.
- Start Tricarb Monitor by typing \TRICARB\TRICARB /SYSOP in a DOS box to run it in the SYSOP mode.
- Use the System|Output directory menu command to set the data directory to C:\TRICARB\DATA.
- Use the System|COM Settings menu command to set the COM port parameters. Use the default settings and adjust the COM port to where the counter is actually connected to.
- Exit Tricarb Monitor. To run it in user mode, double-click the file TRICARB.EXE in the file manager or create a link in a program manager group with C:\TRICARB\TRICARB as the start command.

The online help offers some How to... sections which guide you through the first measurements.
